Need exam invigilation SOP, urges Jadavpur University teachers’ body

Teachers at the university pointed out that students had been using bluetooth on their smartphones to cheat during exams.Kolkata: Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (Juta) has urged the university authorities to formulate a policy on invigilation during exams amid the hijab row, which started with two UG 3 English department girls being asked to remove their hijab on suspicion of cheating during an exam. The association, in an internal note to teachers, expressed concern over cheating and using unfair means during tests as well as appealed to faculty members to protect the “mutual respect between teachers and students”. The teachers’ body also pointed out as the questions asked hurt the student’s religious sentiments, an apology was desirable from the professor. The Juta note to teachers read: “Checking and monitoring by an invigilator during an exam is both legally and ethically recognised. We are concerned about the increasing incidents of cheating and the use of unfair means in exams. If intervention becomes undesirable, the exam system itself will turn into a farce. As educators, we are committed to stopping such incidents. Any undue obstruction or objection to fulfilling our responsibilities is unacceptable… In the current context, we urge the university to formulate a policy regarding invigilation.” Teachers at the university pointed out that students had been using bluetooth on their smartphones to cheat during exams. “As teachers, it is part of our duty to check for suspicious activities by students but we have to remember not to hurt their sentiments. The university must come up with a respectable protocol, dos and don’ts for checking electronic devices and other items during invigilation. It will protect the teacher-student bond,” said a professor.
