Massive Earthquake Hits Myanmar
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar at 11:50 AM (local time) on Friday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and was recorded at Latitude 21.93 N, Longitude 96.07 E.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major destruction, but authorities continue to assess the impact. The US Geological Survey (USGS) and Germany’s GFZ Center for Geosciences confirmed that the earthquake had a shallow epicenter in Myanmar at a depth of 10 km.
Tremors Cause Panic, Structural Damage Reported
As the earthquake struck, residents ran out of buildings, seeking shelter under the scorching sun. The military-led government declared a state of emergency in six regions to manage potential aftershocks and damages.
In Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, tremors damaged parts of the former royal palace and several buildings. Videos circulating on Facebook show debris from affected structures.
In Sagaing, southwest of Mandalay, a 90-year-old bridge collapsed, adding to the destruction. Authorities are monitoring the region for further structural damage.
Thailand Suffers Building Collapse, Three Dead
In neighboring Thailand, tremors from the Myanmar earthquake caused a 30-storey under-construction tower in Bangkok to collapse. At least three workers lost their lives, and 81 people remain trapped under the rubble, according to Thai Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
Rescue operations are underway, with emergency teams working tirelessly to locate survivors and clear debris.
International Reactions and Relief Efforts
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the devastation in Myanmar and Thailand, offering support for relief efforts. Governments across the region are closely monitoring the situation and preparing aid if needed.
