India Sends Immediate Relief to Myanmar

NEW DELHI: India launched ‘Operation Brahma’ on Saturday to assist Myanmar following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that claimed over 1,000 lives and left more than 2,000 injured.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared images on X, confirming that an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130J aircraft had landed in Yangon with 15 tonnes of relief material. The aid includes tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and essential medicines.

“Operation Brahma—India acts as a first responder to assist the people of Myanmar affected by yesterday’s massive earthquake. Our first tranche of 15 tonnes of relief material has landed in Yangon,” Jaiswal stated.

Jaishankar and Modi Assure Continued Support

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to helping Myanmar. He highlighted that the aid shipment also included solar lamps, kitchen sets, and tarpaulins.

“A search and rescue team, along with a medical team, is accompanying this flight. We will continue to monitor developments, and more aid will follow,” he added.

A day before the operation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the disaster in Myanmar and Thailand. He assured India’s full support for relief efforts.

“Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance,” PM Modi posted on X.

Indian Embassy Coordinates Relief Efforts

The Indian Embassy in Myanmar is working closely with local authorities to ensure swift delivery of aid. Officials have also provided an emergency helpline for Indian nationals in Myanmar.

“Following yesterday’s devastating earthquake, we are coordinating the speedy delivery of assistance and relief supplies from India with Myanmar authorities. We are also in constant touch with the Indian community. Reiterate our emergency number for needy Indian nationals: +95-95419602,” the embassy posted on X.

Earthquake’s Impact and International Response

Myanmar’s military junta has sought international assistance following the disaster. The earthquake struck on Friday, causing widespread devastation and a rising death toll. As global relief efforts ramp up, India’s Operation Brahma is among the first major international humanitarian responses.
