Local fitness community grows with new gym, more interest in strength training | News

A new gym opened its doors in Saltillo, adding to the thriving fitness community in north Mississippi.

SALTILLO, Miss. (WTVA) – A new gym opened its doors in Saltillo, adding to the thriving fitness community in north Mississippi.

Owners Tyler and Ginger Berry cut the ribbon on Apex Fitness over the weekend. They are welcoming anyone who wants to work up a sweat and start a healthy lifestyle to join their coach-lead group classes.

“It feels as though fitness is more mainstream,” Tyler said. “It’s more popular. It’s cool. And I couldn’t agree more. I think it’s awesome.”

Tyler is not wrong. Men’s Health reported in January that Gen-Z is doing more heavy lifting.

The Mayo Clinic sites many benefits of strength training. Those include: develops strong bones, manages weight, enhances quality of life, manages chronic conditions, sharpens thinking skills.

The Berrys say all of the workouts at Apex are functional fitness.

“These are functional movements that help you in your day-to-day life,” Ginger said. “We squat so that we’re able to get up and down off the toilet when we’re 80-years-old. We do burpees so if we fall on the floor, we can get up.”

“It’s just a very open arms environment no matter what stage of life you’re in,” Elizabeth Monroe said. She is a member of Apex.

Monroe is about six months pregnant and said she is starting to slow down, but she is still find the time to workout. That means having to adjust workouts to her benefit.

“Every single movement we do here is modifiable,” she said. “So, for example, if you can’t do a push up, you can do it on your knees. If you can’t do them on your knees, you can do them on the wall.”

The fitness community in North Mississippi is growing with the addition of Apex Fitness. Several businesses showed up to the grand opening in support of the gym, members and those that showed up Saturday for a community workout.

“It’s more than just athletes coming together,” Marie McCrary with Nutrishop in Tupelo said. “It’s more just like a family bound together with strength and commitment and people who want to grow.”

Apex Fitness offers coach-lead group class throughout the week.

“Fitness is not one size fits all,” Tyler said. “You find what works for you and you just do it.”

“We want to live a long life but we want to live a long and health life because nobody wants to live a long life and have to have somebody taking care of them so that’s why we do what we do,” Ginger said.
