India Extends Support to Myanmar After Devastating Earthquake
New Delhi: In a major diplomatic move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended aid to Myanmar’s military-led government by sending an 80-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team for earthquake relief operations.
‘Operation Brahma’ Launched for Rescue Mission
On Saturday, India launched ‘Operation Brahma’, deploying an NDRF contingent to Nay Pyi Taw to assist in rescue operations. The devastating earthquake has left over 1,600 people dead, while more than 2,000 remain injured or missing.
The team, trained in heavy urban search-and-rescue missions, carried essential equipment and tools transported in two airlifted sorties.
India’s Role as a First Responder
Reaffirming India’s position as a “first responder” in global disaster relief, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that India has also dispatched two naval ships to Myanmar. Additionally, a 118-member field hospital team from Agra will depart later in the day.
India’s Diplomatic Coordination with Myanmar
India’s ambassador in Myanmar is actively coordinating relief efforts. No casualties have been reported among the Indian community in the country.
Following the NDRF deployment, PM Modi spoke with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, expressing concern over the tragedy and reaffirming India’s commitment as a close friend and neighbor. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also declared India’s support in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
