Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University stays admissions in nearly 50% colleges over failure to undergo NAAC evaluation – ET Education

This significant action, affecting approximately 50% of affiliated institutions, comes as these colleges failed to undergo evaluation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (Bamu) suspended first-year admissions for the 2025-26 academic year in 233 of its 484 affiliated colleges on Saturday. This significant action, affecting approximately 50% of affiliated institutions, comes as these colleges failed to undergo evaluation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).”The affiliated colleges concerned were eligible for NAAC scrutiny. We have invoked the resolution passed by the management council of the university on Nov 21, 2024, while taking action against such colleges,” said Walmik Sarwade, the pro vice-chancellor of the university.Sarwade said the admission capacity for these 233 colleges would be reduced to zero starting the 2025-26 academic year until further notice.”The UGC, central and state govts have been repeatedly asking the colleges to undergo the scrutiny of the NAAC. Though such an evaluation is mandatory, the colleges were giving a snub to the NAAC scrutiny. We were left with no option but to stay the admissions in colleges showing non-compliance,” he said. The affected colleges are distributed across all four districts under Bamu’s jurisdiction — Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Beed and Dharashiv.University officials confirmed that first-year admissions would resume only after these institutions provide evidence of completing the NAAC evaluation.Education activist Tukaram Saraf supported the university’s decision, saying it was essential. “While on one hand we talk of academic excellence and improving the standard of education, on the other hand, there exists a large number of colleges that make a mockery of policy decisions in the field of education. The university authorities must continue their firm and just stand,” he said.
