Cyber Fraud Claims Lives Amid Rising Online Scams
Belagavi, Karnataka: A retired government official and his wife, both in their 80s, died by suicide at their home on Thursday after falling victim to a digital arrest scam. This tragic incident is possibly the first such case in India linked to cyber fraud.
Victims of a Costly Fraud
The elderly couple, Diego Nazareth and Flaviana, were allegedly threatened with digital arrest since January. In fear, they paid ₹5 lakh to two fraudsters who accused them of misusing their SIM card.
Rise in Digital Arrest Scams
With the growing number of cybercrimes, scammers are increasingly using fake legal threats to extort money. Experts warn that such cases highlight the urgent need for digital awareness and cybersecurity measures to protect vulnerable individuals.
