Sarma Removed Following Student Protests
Guwahati: Gauhati University has removed Kandarpa Kumar Sarma from his role as the Controller of Examinations following serious allegations of misconduct towards students. His removal triggered widespread protests in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office on Thursday.
A university committee has been formed to review the matter and reach a final decision within a week. Meanwhile, the registrar has assumed Sarma’s responsibilities on an ad-hoc basis.
Incident Leading to Removal
According to reports, former Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) General Secretary Nayanjyoti Gogoi and Minor Games Secretary Ujjal Kalita visited the controller’s office on Thursday to address a 4th-semester student’s result issue.
Since Sarma was absent, they waited near the lift. Upon his arrival, Sarma allegedly verbally abused them, using offensive language and questioning their authority. He reportedly said:
“You’re not the student’s father, why are you here? You’re drunk and involved in brokerage. We don’t need people like you.”
Both Gogoi and Kalita insisted they were acting as responsible student representatives. The controller’s alleged misconduct raised serious concerns about university administration practices.
Student Complaints and Administration Response
After this incident, several students came forward with similar complaints of mistreatment by Sarma. Initially, they hesitated but later corroborated the accusations.
“We demanded a public apology from the controller. The registrar and other officials requested a meeting with us, but we insisted on speaking directly with the Vice-Chancellor,” said Kalita.
A meeting was arranged with the Vice-Chancellor (VC), where student representatives narrated the incident. The VC assured them that a decision would be communicated shortly.
However, after waiting for 20 minutes, the students asked for an update. This led to an unexpected reaction from the VC, who allegedly accused them of attempting to assault him and create a scene. Despite this, the students remained composed and continued discussions.
University’s Final Decision
As a result of the allegations and student pressure, the university suspended Sarma and appointed the registrar as the interim Controller of Examinations.
A notice issued by the Registrar on Thursday confirmed:
-
A committee, including representatives from PGSU and University Law College Students’ Union (ULCSU), will oversee an impartial review.
-
The committee will submit its findings within a week.
-
The registrar will manage the controller’s duties until further notice.
