Call for Action Amid Ongoing Unrest
New Delhi: A parliamentary panel has urged the government to form a special committee to address the needs of displaced women and children in violence-hit Manipur. The state has been facing an extraordinary crisis for 21 months, leading to the loss of hundreds of lives and the displacement of 50,000–60,000 people.
Recommendations for Relief and Rehabilitation
The committee on education, women, children, youth, and sports, led by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh, recommended direct monitoring and transparent aid delivery to prevent misuse. It emphasized the need for:
-
Education access for displaced children.
-
Healthcare support for lactating mothers.
-
Employment programs for affected women.
-
Protection measures in relief camps to prevent sexual violence.
Women and Children at the Center of the Crisis
The panel highlighted that women and children make up a significant portion of those affected. Many have lost their homes, struggle to access food and medical care, and face severe psychological distress. The lack of economic opportunities has worsened their suffering.
While the government has taken steps to support victims, the committee stressed that more must be done to ensure long-term rehabilitation and security.
