IIEST teachers write to director over PhD fee hike, ETEducation

The association has urged the proposed fee hike be kept in abeyance for the current yearKolkata: The IIEST Teachers’ Association has written to the institute director raising concerns over the exorbitant hike in PhD admission fees. They claimed the rise in fee may act as a deterrent to the PhD admission process that takes place twice a year and affect research quality. The association has urged the proposed fee hike be kept in abeyance for the current year.Sources said the admission fee for students with fellowships in last year’s Dec cycle was Rs 17,500. But it jumped to Rs 41,600 in this year’s July cycle. For students availing hostel, an additional amount of Rs 10,000 for seat rent is added. Besides,a hostel mess fee charge of Rs 27,700 is charged every semester. The new fee structure was approved at the May 15 board of governors meeting, an official said. “The minimum expense that we normally incur for a PhD student was never considered here. Therefore, it appears as if it has been increased. But compare the fee here with the NITs, it is less. We need to strike a balance due to fund crunch,” director VMSR Murthy said.
