India Provides Urgent Humanitarian Aid

NEW DELHI: India is sending over 15 tonnes of relief material to Myanmar following a devastating earthquake that killed at least 144 people and injured more than 700.

The relief package includes tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, hygiene kits, solar lamps, generators, and critical medicines like paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages, according to ANI sources.

Indian Embassy Monitors the Situation

The Indian Embassy in Myanmar is closely monitoring the situation. So far, there have been no reports of injuries to Indian citizens.

In a statement, the Indian Embassy in Bangkok reassured citizens:
“After powerful earthquake tremors were recorded in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand, we are closely coordinating with Thai authorities. No untoward incidents involving Indian nationals have been reported. In case of emergencies, Indians in Thailand can contact the emergency number +66 618819218.”

Myanmar’s Earthquake Vulnerability

Myanmar experienced six earthquakes on Friday, according to the National Center for Seismology.

Despite being in a high-risk seismic zone—due to the collision of the Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates—Myanmar lacks an official national seismic hazard map.

From 1990 to 2019, data from the International Seismological Centre showed that Myanmar and surrounding regions experienced an average of 140 earthquakes (magnitude 3.0 or higher) annually. The country remains vulnerable to large-magnitude quakes and potential tsunamis along its coastline.
