Lack of faculty hits German, Russian courses at Lucknow University

The Russian language has faced the same fate. A master’s course was last offered around 10 years ago, and although the student response was decent, admissions were halted completelyLucknow: Lucknow University, once known for its foreign language programmes, has been unable to offer German and Russian courses for nearly a decade as qualified faculty is not available. There was a time when French, Russian and German attracted strong enrolment at the university. Today, however, only French remains active under the department of English and modern European languages, where more than 150 students are currently enrolled. German language education has been most affected, even though 60 seats were officially available across the proficiency, diploma and advanced diploma programmes — 30 in proficiency, 20 in diploma and 10 in advanced diploma.The Russian language has faced the same fate. A master’s course was last offered around 10 years ago, and although the student response was decent, admissions were halted completely.There is one sanctioned post each for faculty in Russian language and German language. However, despite repeated advertisements, the selection process is pending because no candidate applied, said head of English and modern European languages, Prof P Nazneen Khan.
