New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Myanmar’s military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, on Saturday, expressing condolences and offering support after the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks.
In a post on X, Modi stated:
“Spoke with Senior General H E Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Conveyed our deep condolences for the lives lost in the earthquake. As a close friend and neighbor, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour.”
To assist Myanmar in its recovery, India launched ‘Operation Brahma’, a large-scale humanitarian mission providing immediate relief and support.
Over 1,000 Dead as Myanmar Struggles to Recover
The powerful earthquake has left behind widespread devastation. The death toll has surpassed 1,000, with rescuers tirelessly pulling bodies from the rubble. Thousands have been left homeless as homes, hospitals, and infrastructure collapsed.
In response, India quickly mobilized rescue teams, medical aid, and relief supplies to help Myanmar rebuild.
India’s Rapid Response: Rescue Teams & Humanitarian Aid
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reaffirmed its commitment to aiding neighboring countries, stating:
“It is our policy to be the first responder in times of crisis.”
NDRF Teams Carry Out Search and Rescue Operations

An 80-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team arrived in Myanmar with specialized rescue tools.

The team is using concrete cutters, drill machines, hammers, and plasma cutting tools to clear debris and save trapped survivors.
Navy & Air Force Deliver Urgent Supplies

The Indian Navy deployed INS Satpura and INS Savitri, carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Yangon. Two additional ships will follow soon.

A C-130J military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force delivered tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generators, and essential medicines.

A 118-member medical team from Agra will fly to Myanmar on Saturday to establish a fully equipped field hospital.
Confirming India’s swift response, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared on X:
“Operation Brahma is in full swing. The first batch of humanitarian aid has reached Yangon, ensuring Myanmar receives the necessary assistance.”
India & Myanmar: A Strong Historical Bond
India and Myanmar share a 1,643-kilometer-long border and deep historical, cultural, and strategic ties. Over the years, India has consistently extended aid to Myanmar in times of crisis, strengthening their bilateral relationship.
As relief efforts continue, Operation Brahma stands as a symbol of India’s humanitarian commitment and regional cooperation.
