AI-Generated Portraits Capture Key Moments
NEW DELHI: In a creative twist, the Union government shared a series of Studio Ghibli-inspired AI portraits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. The 12 AI-generated images, posted on social media platform X, depict memorable moments from his tenure in a whimsical, pastel-colored style reminiscent of Hayao Miyazaki’s films.
To introduce the collection, the post read: “Main character? No. He’s the whole storyline. Experience New India in Studio Ghibli strokes.”
A Unique Blend of Politics and Art
The AI-generated artwork presents PM Modi in various significant settings, including:
-
Diplomatic Engagements – Modi meeting US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.
-
National Pride – Wearing an Indian Army uniform, holding the Tricolour, and standing before the Sengol sceptre in Parliament.
-
Infrastructure and Defense – Piloting a Tejas Twin Seat Light Combat Aircraft and standing beside a Vande Bharat train.
-
Global Involvement – Scenes from his Maldives visit and participation in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan cleanliness drive.
Ghibli Trend Attracts Other Politicians
Interestingly, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also joined the trend. He shared AI-generated portraits of himself, playfully stating, “I’ve been assimilated into the Ghibli trend! Officially Spirited Away!”—a nod to Miyazaki’s beloved animated film.
Miyazaki’s AI Controversy Resurfaces
Meanwhile, as AI-generated Ghibli-style images flood social media, an old video of Hayao Miyazaki criticizing AI animation has resurfaced. In the clip, the legendary animator calls AI-generated work “an insult to life itself.” Consequently, this has reignited debates on whether technology can ever replicate the emotional depth of hand-drawn animation.
