Report on engineering students failing in different subjects presented at Jadavpur University faculty meeting – ET Education

Kolkata: A Jadavpur University internal survey report on the issue of an increased number of engineering students failing in different subjects, especially in theory papers, was presented at the engineering faculty council meeting on Wednesday. TOI reported on Monday that the survey revealed more than 40% of students in nine out of 16 engineering streams at JU failed in some paper or another. Civil engineering topped the list with 75% of students having backlogs, followed by electrical engineering (68%) and metallurgical and material engineering (61%).The alarming rise in the number of students with supplementary and backlog prompted the university to form a committee last year in May to conduct a survey to figure out the reasons and take measures to address the issue. The committee, comprising teachers and student representatives, surveyed 1,052 students and 137 teachers over a year before submitting their findings.A source said, “The report was placed at the engineering faculty council meeting for a brief discussion. It was decided that the heads of the departments will share the report with the rest of the professors of the engineering streams for more observations and views. Though certain recommendations were suggested by the committee, the faculty council felt the need to get specific views from all professors before making a decision.”
