NEW DELHI: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi met with leaders from various Manipur communities on Saturday as the state continues to struggle with violence. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting the conflict-hit region.
In a post on X, Gandhi stated:
“Yesterday, I met with Congress leaders from different communities of Manipur in Parliament. After nearly two years of violence and now President’s rule, it is deeply concerning that PM Modi has still not visited the state. The people of Manipur deserve peace and stability. Every Indian stands united in wanting a lasting solution. Resolving this crisis must be our national priority.”
Manipur has been under President’s rule since February, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the decision after prolonged unrest.
Ethnic violence has plagued the state since 2023, with clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities leading to over 250 deaths and widespread displacement. The government’s failure to control the crisis raised concerns about Singh’s leadership.
In December 2024, Singh publicly apologized for the violence and urged communities to reconcile. He called for peace and forgiveness. However, the Congress party strongly opposed his resignation, accusing him of deepening divisions in the state.
