Stage set for stormy end to Budget session as Centre plans to table bill tomorrow

Government Pushes for Passage of Waqf Amendment Bill Amid Opposition Resistance

The final days of the Budget session are set to be stormy, as the government prepares to push for the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill on Wednesday. Despite strong opposition from rival parties, the government is determined to move forward with the bill’s passage in both Houses of Parliament.

Sources from the government confirm that they have completed all necessary preparations, backed by support from NDA allies and a few non-aligned parties. If required, the session may be extended by a few days, although no official confirmation has been made yet.

Opposition Vows to Oppose the Bill

Opposition parties have signaled their strong opposition to the bill and vowed to block it during its discussion in Parliament. The government, however, remains confident that it has the support to pass the bill.

Kiren Rijiju Urges Political Parties to Participate in Debate

As the bill is introduced in Parliament, Kiren Rijiju, the Minister for Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, emphasized the importance of participating in the debate. He highlighted the extensive consultation process that led to the bill’s formulation.

“Outside Parliament, we have held a record number of consultations. The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has ensured the most comprehensive consultation in India’s democratic history,” Rijiju stated. “Now that the bill is ready, I request all political parties to engage in the debate and express their views in the House. We should not mislead the public,” he added.

Possible Extension of Parliamentary Session for Bill Passage

Rijiju also indicated that the Parliament’s session could be extended if needed to ensure the bill’s passage. “If required, the session will be extended for a few more days to ensure we complete the necessary discussions and pass the bill,” he said.

Key Takeaways:

  • The government is pushing for the Waqf Amendment Bill’s passage, despite strong opposition.

  • Kiren Rijiju calls for full participation in the debate and stresses the importance of transparency.

  • The session may be extended to allow for further discussion if necessary.
