NEW DELHI: In a progressive move, the Assam government has announced that single fathers employed in state government departments will now be eligible for child care leave (CCL). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this decision through a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting employees facing unique caregiving responsibilities.
Support for Single Fathers
Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the initiative, stating, “Sometimes, life takes unexpected turns, and a man may become the sole caregiver for a child. If such a situation arises for our state government employees, we’ve got you covered.”
Previously, CCL in Assam was primarily available to female government employees for situations such as a child’s illness, exams, or other critical needs. Now, under the updated policy, single fathers—including widowers, divorcees, and unmarried men—can also avail this benefit.
Key Features of the Updated CCL Policy
-
Eligibility: Single fathers in Assam’s state government service, including biological, adopted, or legally dependent children.
-
Age Limit: The policy applies to children up to 18 years old.
-
Duration: Eligible employees can take up to two years (730 days) of CCL.
-
Usage Flexibility: Leave can be availed in multiple phases but not more than three times per calendar year.
-
Special Provisions: Government employees with custody of disabled children are also covered under this updated directive.
This reform marks a significant step toward gender equality in caregiving policies, ensuring that fathers raising children alone receive the same workplace benefits as their female counterparts.
